Khi nhiều tính từ cùng bổ nghĩa cho cùng 1 danh từ thì các tính từ cần một thứ tự nhất định để sắp xếp vị trí trước sau của chúng. Và chúng ta gọi đây là trật tự của tính từ trong tiếng Anh. Nắm rõ được phần văn phạm này sẽ giúp bạn rất nhiều, không những trong các kì thi quốc tế mà còn trong các kỹ năng viết và đọc hiểu nữa đấy. - ĐỊNH NGHĨA:
– Trật tự của tính từ là thứ tự của các tính từ trong cùng một câu hoặc một vế. Các tính từ này đều bổ nghĩa chung cho một danh từ nhất định
Ví dụ:
- I have a long curly brown hair
- PHÂN LOẠI
– Chúng ta thường nói a fat old lady, nhưng lại không thể nói an old fat lady, a small shiny black leather handbag chứ không nói là a leather black shiny small handbag. Vậy các trật tự này được quy định như thế nào?
- Tính từ về màu sắc [color], nguồn gốc [origin], chất liệu [material] và mục đích [purpose] thường theo thứ tự sau:
+ Màu sắc [color]: red, brown, blue, violet…
+ Nguồn gốc [origin]: Spanish, Italian, German…
+ Chất liệu [material]: leather, wooden, glass…
+ Mục đích [purpose]: riding, drinking, playing….
+ Danh từ [noun]: boots, beer, mug, flower, vase….
- Các tính từ khác ví dụ như tính từ chỉ kích cỡ [size], chiều dài [length] và chiều cao [height] …thường đặt trước các tính từ chỉ màu sắc, nguồn gốc, chất liệu và mục đích .
Ví dụ:
- a round glass table [a glass round table] [Một chiếc bàn tròn bằng kính].
- a big modern brick house [a modern, big brick house] [Một ngôi nhà lớn hiện đại được xây bằng gạch]
- Những tính từ diễn tả sự phê phán [judgements] hay thái độ [attitudes] ví dụ như: lovely, perfect, wonderful, silly…đặt trước các tính từ khác.
Ví dụ:
- a lovely small black cat. [Một chú mèo đen, nhỏ, đáng yêu].
- beautiful big black eyes. [Một đôi mắt to, đen, đẹp tuyệt vời]

Ví dụ:
- Four lovely big old oval brown Vietnamese plastic shopping bags.
Ví dụ khi sắp xếp cụm danh từ
- a /leather/ handbag/ black
\>>> Ta thấy xuất hiện các tính từ:
– leather chỉ chất liệu làm bằng da [Material]
– black chỉ màu sắc [Color]
*** Vậy theo trật tự NOSACOMP cụm danh từ trên sẽ theo vị trí đúng là: a black leather handbag.
Một ví dụ khác:
- Japanese/ a/ car/ new/ red / big/ luxurious/
\>>> Bạn sẽ sắp xếp trật tự các tính từ này như thế nào?
– Tính từ đỏ [red] chỉ màu sắc [Color]
– Tính từ mới [new] chỉ độ tuổi [Age]
– Tính từ sang trọng [luxurious] chỉ quan điểm, đánh giá [Opinion]
– Tính từ Nhật Bản [Japanese] chỉ nguồn gốc, xuất xứ [Origin].
– Tính từ to [big] chỉ kích cỡ [Size] của xe ô tô.

A. Lý thuyết trật tự tính từ trong tiếng Anh
Chúng ta nói a fat old lady, nhưng lại không thể nói an old fat lady, a small shiny black leather handbag chứ không nói là a leather black shiny small handbag. Vậy trật tự các từ này được sắp xếp như thế nào? Sau đây là một số quy tắc cần nhớ:
1. Mạo từ hoặc tính từ sở hữu hoặc tính từ bất định [SOME, ANY, SEVERAL, MUCH, MANY] luôn đi đầu
2. Số thứ tự luôn đi trước số đếm
Ví dụ: The first three ...
- Theo sau những từ trong quy tắc 1 và 2 trên, ta có thứ tự các tính từ còn lại như sau:
OSASCOMP
Opinion -> Size -> Age -> Shape -> Color -> Original -> Material -> Purpose
Ý kiến -> Kích thước -> Tuổi -> Hình dáng-> Màu sắc -> Nguồn gốc -> Chất liệu -> Mục đích
* Lưu ý:
- Ý KIẾN [OPINION]: từ miêu tả tính chất có tính chủ quan, theo ý kiến của người nói: ugly, beautiful, handsome...
- KÍCH THƯỚC [SIZE]: từ miêu tả độ to, nhỏ của đối tượng: small, big, huge...
- ĐỘ TUỔI [AGE]: từ miêu tả tinh chất liên quan đến độ tuổi của đối tượng: young, old, new...
- HÌNH DẠNG [SHAPE]: từ miêu tả hình dạng của đối tượng: round, square, flat, rectangular...
- MÀU SẮC [COLOR]: từ chỉ màu: white, blue, red, yellow, black...
- NGUỒN GỐC [ORIGIN]: từ chỉ nơi xuất thân của đối tượng, có thể liên quan đến một quốc gia, châu lục hoặc hành tinh hoặc phương hướng: French, Vietnamese, lunar, Eastern, American, Greek...
- CHẤT LIỆU [MATERIAL]: từ chỉ chất liệu mà đối tượng được làm ra: wooden, paper, metal, cotton...
- MỤC ĐÍCH [PURPOSE]: từ chỉ mục đích sử dụng của đối tượng: sleeping [sleeping bag], roasting [roasting tin]...
Dĩ nhiên, hiếm khi tất cả các loại tính từ như trên xuất hiện cùng lúc cạnh nhau. Ta chỉ cần xác định loại tính từ và cho nó vào trật tự như trên.
Khi có nhiều tính từ thuộc về Ý KIẾN, tính từ nào ngắn hơn đứng trước, dài hơn đứng sau [a tall straight, dignified person]
* Ví dụ: A silly young English man = Một chàng trai trẻ người Anh ngớ ngẩn
A huge round metal bowl = Một cái bát kim loại tròn to tướng
A small red sleeping bag = Một cái túi ngủ dã ngoại nhỏ màu đỏ.
Our first three big blue american cars = Những cái ô tô lớn màu xanh từ Mỹ đầu tiên của chúng ta
