Growing up with acne-prone skin, BareMinerals was the first makeup brand I was allowed to use as an eighth grader since it's mineral-based formulations and powders are light, breathable, and appropriate for school. Now, as a 26 year old, I still use BareMinerals, but with a newfound appreciation for its formulas. Its complexion products are the perfect merge between skin care and makeup — and the BareMinerals Complexion Rescue Tinted Moisturizer in Terra 8.5 is one product that has truly streamlined my morning routine.

Filled with skin-loving ingredients, specifically protective ingredients such as titanium dioxide and iron oxides, BareMinerals will be my complexion's lifelong daytime best friend. It's truly made embracing "skinimalism" that much easier.

I was sat working my way through a copy of my week-old Women’s Health magazine when I stumbled across a free sample page. How my beauty radar and eagle-eyes had missed this page when I first has a quick look through is beyond me, but nevertheless, I was excited to come across a free beauty sample! The sample was from bareMinerals and it was their Complexion Rescue Tinted Hydrating Gel Cream. My excitement wavered a little for one of two reasons. Number one: bareMinerals products have sadly never agreed with my skin in the past, and even though I think their mineral powders have a beautiful coverage, they have me looking like I’ve dunked my face in a sink full of water within one hours wear time. And number two: the colour was ‘Natural’. And you know what ‘natural’ usually means with foundations don’t you? That kind of ‘natural’ that’s not natural to look at what-so-ever and has that tinge of orange zest.

Anyway, I popped the sample to one side at my desk and made a mental note to remember to apply it the next morning and give it a fair shot. Being a beauty hoarder and serious enthusiast, I just can’t help giving products the benefit of the doubt and trying them out, and in this circumstance, I’m very glad that I did!

bareMinerals Complexion Rescue Tinted Hydrating Gel Cream review | Rachael Divers

I did a little reading about Complexion Rescue before I used it and found out that it’s a mix between a BB and CC cream, and a tinted moisturiser. It’s formulated with olive derived squalene, marine botanicals, hydrating humectants Trehalose and Glycerin and coconut derived ingredients to replenish, nourish, hydrate and condition skin throughout wear. It’s also said to give skin a 215% increase in hydration after just one week of use. It also has an SPF of 30.

When I first applied the gel cream, my first thought was that it was definitely way too dark for me, but I persevered anyway. I applied the gel cream with my fingers and gently blended it into my skin and down my neck to hide any tell-tale signs of this being the wrong colour match for me. The coverage was very light, but I found that I could add more of the product on top to give my skin a little more coverage that I’d call round about medium. I went in with my Zoeva 103 Defined Buffer Brush to smooth everything over. My face looked quite shiny at first so I was worried that the gel cream would have the same effect that the mineral powder did, but thankfully, it settled into my skin and looked much more natural. Radiant but without the oily sheen.

I went on to apply my concealer as usual [Collection Lasting Perfection in Fair], and set my under eyes and t-zone with my Ben Nye Neutral Set powder.

bareMinerals Complexion Rescue Tinted Hydrating Gel Cream review | Rachael Divers

I was really impressed with how radiant the Complexion rescue looked on my skin once I’d finished applying the rest of my makeup. It was really natural but looked polished and was the perfect amount of coverage for the daytime. Of course, I could still see my acne under my jawline, but for a daytime foundation to wear when I’m working in my office or out and about running errands, I can’t really fault it.

Complexion Rescue wore well throughout the day, I did re-powder around my nose a couple of times but this is usual for me on a normal day anyway.

Complexion Rescue comes in a range of 16 shades and retails at £27 for 35ml, it also has some very positive reviews which leads me to think that this product is somewhat of a favourite in the bareMinerals line. They recommend for you to apply it with their dual fibre smoothing face brush, but I found applying it with my fingers or my Zoeva 103 Defined Buffer Brush also worked a treat.

So, would I buy the full size? Although I really enjoyed using it, I actually really love the Dead Sea Spa Magik Diamond Range Beauty Balm which retails at £13.50 for 50ml. Although it has a lower SPF, I always apply my La Roche Posay Anthelios XL Tinted Fluid SPF 50 underneath to give me all the protection that I need. I find it has an amazing coverage, wears beautifully throughout the day and has all the goodness of Dead Sea minerals, plant extracts and antioxidant Vitamin E. It also stimulates collagen production and is an anti-ageing formula. So for that reason, I’ll be sticking with my Dead Sea Spa Magick BB Cream, but the bareMinerals Complexion Rescue gave good game.
