Can you share an Apple Music playlist with someone?

If your group of friends is anything like mine, you’re obligated to share every great track you come across. Whether you send it to the group chat or through social media, sharing our favorite songs with our friends is one of the best ways to find new music. If only there was a way you could team up to create the ultimate playlist that all of your friends could add to whenever they please… Oh wait, there is! Here’s how to make collaborative playlists on Spotify and Apple Music…

Spotify

With Spotify’s collaborative playlists, it’s up to you to decide who you want to give access to. The only way your friends can start adding songs to the playlist is if they’ve been given the web address for your playlist. To make sure no random strangers can start adding nonsense to your perfect playlist, you also can’t publish these playlists to your public profile. [It’s for the best, I promise]

To add some accountability to what’s added, the username for whoever adds which track is shown for you to see. That way, if your friend Jim keeps adding Brittney Spears to your strictly Underground Rap playlist, you know exactly who to yell at.

Follow these steps to get started:

  • Create a playlist, as usual.
  • Next, right-click its title in the main sidebar and select Collaborative Playlist from the pop-up menu that appears. [The music note will turn from white to green, and a little dot should appear next to it.]
  • On that same right-click menu, click share to give access to whoever you want to collab with.

Option two: Browse songs first, and then tap the three-dot icon on the right of the song you want to bring up a new list. Choose Add to a Playlist… Then, tap the playlist you just made.

After you’ve added the songs you want to this playlist, it’s time to share it.

  • Tap Share Playlist. Then, you’re free to choose whatever platform or person you want to share your playlist with. [Message, E-mail, Twitter, etc. are all available for you]

In Conclusion…

You can easily share an Apple Music playlist with friends and family across various devices. mrmohock/Shutterstock

After you create a playlist on Apple Music, you may want to share it — and you can do so through AirDrop, Messages, social media, and more.

To share a playlist, tap the three dots at the top of the page to open a pop-up menu. From there, you can choose the "Share Playlist…" option. This will bring you to a new page where you can opt to share it via any number of apps, including your messages, email, and social media. You can also share it directly through AirDrop with any nearby Apple devices.

In order for your friend or family member to view the playlist, they must also have a subscription to Apple Music. If they do, the playlist will be added to their library so they can view it at any time.

Here's how to share an Apple Music playlist.

1. Open the Apple Music app on your mobile devices [iPhone, iPad, iPod touch or Android] or Mac or PC.

2. Tap "Playlists" in the "Library" tab.

6. Choose from the many options listed to share your playlist as you like. You can tap a recent contact at the top, use AirDrop with nearby devices, or choose to send by email or social media. Swipe left or right over the app shortcuts to scroll through more options. Some may allow you to add a message when sending. Finally, you can tap the "Copy" option to copy a link to the playlist, which you can then paste anywhere.

Also, for each Playlist, Edit, and be sure to check Show on my Profile and in Search. I think that makes them Public and more shareable.

I am having the same issue. All older playlists are shareable but anything I’ve created in the past few weeks is not, the option is simply missing from all new playlists. I tried a few of the offered solutions found online but nothing works. I’ve called Apple a few times too and they can’t figure it out either. I hope somebody does fix it soon, it’s a bummer not being able to share stuff.

Solved. You will have to tap on your icon in the top right corner of the Listen tab at the bottom of the music navigation. When you do you will have to edit your profile. Go through the procedures it asks. You will eventually be shown all your contacts that you can share with. You can continue if you don’t want or can’t find the person you want to invite to share your music. You will then be asked if you want to share with everyone with r kept private. Continue on. You will then see all your playlists. Click the one you made that you want to be shareable. Finish up the process and prompts. Go to your playlists and you can now share that very playlist you made. I know…convoluted and *****.

This is exactly why I hate Apple. They always make things way more complicated than they need to be. I've just spent the last hour and still haven't figured it out! FML! Argggggh!

I figured it out. You have to create a profile on Apple Music [you can choose only approved people, when it comes to who can see your profile], and then you will be able to share it! Go to Apple Music, click your photo on the top right hand corner under “Listen Now”. If you don’t have a photo, it will be the silhouette person icon. And then go from there! Enjoy!

I spoke to someone at Apple today he has photos and screen recording of what I see and is going to pass on to engineers and get back to me on Friday. Fingers crossed for some helpful info. Will update if I hear back!

Yes any new playlists I create the Share playlist option simply doesn’t show after you click the three dot icon. Happened to me a month ago and I tried a few days later and the share playlist option was available. Perhaps there’s a glitch and allows you to share at a later date?
