What is a functional relationship between two quantities?A function exists when each x-value (input, independent variable) is paired with exactly one y-value (output, dependent variable). This pairing is also referred to as a functional relationship.
How does a graph show a functional relationship?If you see a graph where the line is slanting up from left to right, it means that the function is increasing; in other words, as x increases, y increases. If you see a graph where the line is slanting down from left to right, it means the opposite: the function is decreasing, or as x increases, y decreases.
How would you describe the relationship between two quantities?Two quantities have a proportional relationship if they can be expressed in the general form y = kx, where k is the constant of proportionality. In other words, these quantities always maintain the same ratio. That is, when you divide any pair of the two values, you always get the same number k.
