Sims 4 is now available as a free download on PC, PlayStation and Xbox game consoles. As EA announced (opens in new tab) in September, starting Oct. 18, 2022, new players can download Sims 4 for free.

The life simulation game is available for PC via the EA app or Origin, on Mac via Origin, Steam, PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One. And what's more, EA is holding a live stream to reveal upcoming plans for future Sims 4. The special edition steam, "Behind The Sims Summit" airs simultaneously on The Sims YouTube and Twitch channels on Oct. 18, 2022 at 10 a.m. PT/1 p.m. ET.

Additionally, EA Play and EA Play Pro members will receive exclusive bundles of The Sims 4 via The Play List on Oct. 18. The EA Play Edition of Sims 4 includes The Sims 4 Get To Work Expansion Pack, whereas the EA Play Pro Edition includes The Sims 4 Get To Work Expansion Pack and The Sims 4 Toddler Stuff Pack.

The Sims 4 is now free worldwide. 8 years after its launch (back in 2014), EA's game goes to the free-to-play format. That's right, The Sims 4 becomes free for anyone who wants to try it and get it. And when we get it, it will be forever, of course. Although it is only and exclusively the base game (without any kind of expansion or downloadable content), a free horse... You can download it now on PlayStation Store, Microsoft Store and Steam to have it available on the platform that suits you best (or all of them). Because The Sims never go out of style.

How much do all The Sims 4 DLCs cost?

According to The Sims 4 page on Steam, the game has 59 downloadable content with a price between 5 and 40 euros, being able to acquire all of them for $984.43, although right now, there is a sale on Steam that reduces the amount to $641.42.

A figure that will be expanded soon, because with the conversion of the game to free to play, EA has promised to be "as committed as ever to developing new and meaningful experiences for players and will continue to develop and release The Sims 4 packs, Kits and Sims Delivery Express drops in the foreseeable future."

When will we have The Sims 5?

EA has been avoiding pronouncements on the matter for eons now, so any date you find out there is a mere guessing exercise. Still, judging by the new DLC plans for The Sims 4, it's highly likely that we won't see The Sims 5 until 2024... at the earliest.

Luckily, and to kill the wait, The Sims 4 continues to give us great moments, partly thanks to the best mods from the community and partly due to the nonsense that can happen as soon as we activate some of its funniest cheats and codes.

After running the odd free weekend here and there for years, EA has opted to make The Sims 4 base game fully free for all new players on PC, Mac, and console starting October 18.

Originally released in 2014, The Sims 4 boasts a playerbase of millions already, and has received no small amount of paid add-ons and free updates over the years. Notably, the game has a vast library of paid expansions which, at full price, now amounts to somewhere over $900 worth of content altogether.

By dropping the $20 pricetag from the base game, EA stands to make it that much easier for new players to join The Sims 4 ecosystem, and potentially purchase some of that downloadable content down the line.

"Our community has continued to inspire us with the billions of unique Sims they’ve created, the countless stories they’ve told, and the remarkable builds they've designed," reads a blog from The Sims 4 team. "We’re excited to continue to welcome in more players than ever to create new stories, and explore without boundaries. The Sims has always been about celebrating new ways to play and offers so many possibilities to discover."

For reference, The Sims 4 has been steadily gaining new players since that somewhat rocky 2014 release, and is routinely credited by EA as one of the franchises helping to drive its live services portfolio, along with the likes of Apex Legends and FIFA Ultimate Team. While it has made fewer appearances in the company's financial reports and earnings calls over the last year, back in May 2021 the game celebrated 6 consecutive years of growth and a playerbase of 36 million players.

More The Sims 4 content on the horizon

While the latest game has nearly doubled the lifespan of other numbered games in the series, EA doesn't seem keen to retire The Sims 4 just quite yet. Along with news of the free-to-play drop, EA and developer Maxis have lightly confirmed that the duo will continue to create content for the current iteration of the long-running series, continuing The Sims 4's near decade-long reign.

"With The Sims 4 going free to play, our team is more dedicated than ever to developing new and meaningful The Sims 4 experiences for our players," reads a blog post from the team. "We will continue to develop and release packs, kits and Sims Delivery Express drops into the foreseeable future."
