IELTS LISTENING MATCHING QUESTIONS

The IELTS Listening Test has 40 questions, each section having 10 questions. There are several types of questions asked in the test; one of them is Matching Questions.

In the Matching Question, your task is to match a numbered list of items heard in the audio to a set of options provided in the section. You can expect this question in the 1st or the 3rd section.

Essential tips to remember while answering the Matching Question.

  1. Some of the options listed can have similar meanings, and you can get confused. Try and differentiate these options. Select the option that fits the context of the question.

  2. The questions will follow the order of the recording; you need to focus on the audio accordingly.

  3. You should listen to the audio while simultaneously reading the questions and the options. This will help you identify the correct answer.

  4. You must avoid spending too much time on any one question. Time management is a must while attempting the listening test, as you only get 30 minutes to complete the test.

  5. Attempt all questions. Even if you feel that you are unsure about a particular question, still attempt it. It's better to make a guess than leave a question unanswered.

Useful strategies for solving the IELTS Multiple Choice Question

  1. Read the question carefully

Sometimes, the question might seem a little tricky when you first look at them. You should analyze the question and establish a relationship to the listed options.

2. Identify the keywords in the question.

It's essential to identify and highlight the keywords in the question. Keywords can help to locate the suitable answer.

3. Identify synonyms and paraphrases.

Examiners tend to use a lot of synonyms and paraphrases. When you read the set of options, try and think of all the possible synonyms and paraphrases.

4. Beware of distractors

Words such as "But" and "However" are distractors. Distractors are used to change the meaning of the previous sentence.

For example, I love eating ice cream but have stopped eating them now.

5. Predict the answers

In some questions, you will be able to predict and match the question to the set of options given. This will help you narrow down and eliminate some of the choices.

6. Transfer the answers accurately.

At the end of the test, you are required to transfer the answers. Ensure that you do it accurately. You have to answer by writing a letter and not a word or a phrase in the listening test.
