On the fringe of practicality, the best way to think of the Asus ROG Mothership GZ700GX is as a design exercise giving you an extraordinary peek into the possible future of gaming laptops. Pleasantly outlandish, it’s not the most expensive laptop in the world. But with a price tag of just under $6000 for this base unit, it’s not inexpensive either.

Made of black brushed aluminum, what you’re really paying for is a concept design with intriguing cooling features. It’s a massive 17-inch desktop-replacement laptop. But the 2-in-1 convertible form factor is the real focus of the Mothership.

Measuring 16.1×12.6×1.17-inches, all hardware and the ROG Intelligent Cooling components managing thermal output are in the display portion of this behemoth. How much does this hulk weigh? 10.5 pounds [14.5 pounds including the two power bricks].

Fair warning, opening the Mothership will be a challenge. Its core conceit is that it’s technically a convertible, able to transform into a massive tablet. Although the keyboard is removable, the 17.3-inch screen is not a touch display. Still, you get a Full HD [1080p] 144Hz G-Sync Anti-Glare panel.

Powering this machine is a powerful, overclockable Intel Core i9-9980HK CPU, 128GB RAM, 6TB M.2 PCIe NVMe SSD Raid 0. And since there’s ample room, you get the full-powered mobile version of the Nvidia RTX 2080 graphics card with 8GB GDDR6 vRAM.

Ports are spread around the large chassis and include three USB 3.1 ports, a USB Type-C port with Thunderbolt 3 support, headset and mic jacks and an Ethernet jack on the left. And on the right is one more USB 3.1 port, a USB-C port with DisplayPort 1.4 output enabled, an HDMI port and an SD card slot.

  • Excellent graphics
  • Great cooling components
  • Fantastic audio
  • Comfortable keyboard

2. Asus ROG G703GI

The Asus ROG G703GI is one of the most powerful gaming laptops you’ll ever try, which is owing to its eye-wateringly high price. It’s a monstrous gaming laptop that impresses with brilliant performance.

It shares a metal armor design with the ROG G70. Measuring 16.7×12.6×2-inches and weighing just less than 10.4 pounds, this brushed aluminum beast of a laptop is big and bulky. But build quality is excellent.

Games look fantastic on the built-in 17.3-inch 1080p screen with IPS, especially when all the graphics bells and whistles are turned on. The display supports a 144Hz refresh rate and G-Sync for smooth and responsive game play.

The ROG G703GI is available in a number of configurations. This unit comes with an unlocked Intel Core i9-8950HK CPU, 32GB DDR4 RAM, 2TB FireCuda SSHD, and overclocked Nvidia GTX 1080 graphics card with 8GB of vRAM.

You can set the backlit keyboard in a range of lighting configurations. The keyboard feels responsive with plenty of travel and a satisfying click that’s reminiscent of mechanical keyboards. And the offset touchpad feels natural with quick responsiveness.

Above the keyboard are a set of unique function keys to adjust volume and more or unmute the microphone. The Aura button brings up the ROG Aura software for customizing the RGB lighting. Next to that is a button with an Xbox logo to shore up the Game Bar feature in Windows 10.

The bulky size allows for a large range of ports, including a USB-C Thunderbolt 3 port, three USB 3.1 ports, a mini-DisplayPort, HDMI, SD card reader and Ethernet port.

  • Excellent gaming performance
  • Large screen
  • High-end components
  • Great keyboard

In the world of ultra-high-end gaming laptops, the Acer Predator 21X is a unicorn. Meaning that if you’re fortunate enough to find one and you have the means. Snap it up. It demonstrates the amount of performance, high-end components, and features that can be crammed into a relatively portable computer. And with a price tag of around $9000, it’s the most expensive gaming laptop on the list.

Measuring 22.36×12.38×3.27-inches, this formidable gaming machine comes in its own large, waterproof high-grade plastic case with wheels and a handle to help you transport it like a rolling suitcase. Weighing 18.6-pounds, it’s also heavier than any laptop on the list, pushing the boundaries of what you can call a laptop.

With its attention-grabbing looks, Acer ensures that no other gaming laptop matches its audacity with an impressive laundry list of high-end gaming components to match, like a 21-inch curved screen.

The curved 2000R Full HD [2560×1080] widescreen comes with IPS and NVIDIA G-SYNC technology. It has an aspect ratio of 21:9 and allows for CinemaScope-wide movies or two or three side by side game windows. A lightbar embedded in the laptop’s hinge houses the sensors for the Tobii eye-tracking system, which works with features in games that support the technology.

Powering this massive system is a 2.9GHz Intel Core i7-7820HK processor, 64GB DDR4 RAM, two 512GB PCIe SSD in a RAID 0 array as a boot drive + 1TB 7200rpm MHD, and two NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 SLI.

If you prefer the solid feel and rapid response of a mechanical keyboard. The Predator 21X uses Cherry MX Brown switches that offer amazing tactile feedback and RGB lighting, which is fully customizable in the Predator Sense Utility.

Also included in this voluminous chassis are six speakers: two tweeters and two midrange speakers on either side of the keyboard. And two bass drivers/subwoofers on the bottom panel. And like a Bugatti Veyron, multiple fans keep the massive system cool with two for each of the GPUs, one for the CPU, and two forcing cooling air over the rest of the system.

  • Immensely powerful
  • Expansive 21-inch screen
  • Mechanical keyboard
  • Lots of innovation

The MSI GT83VR Titan is another example of what happens to gaming laptops when money is no object. Clad in brushed aluminum, the 13.1-pound GT83VR Titan cuts an imposing, desk-monopolizing figure at 16.9×12.4×2.5-inches at its thickest section. It has an aluminum lid, and the rear vents are trimmed in red aluminum.

It has a staggering 18.4-inch display with a 1920×1080 resolution serving up plenty of vivid hues and crisp detail. The Dynaudio speakers delivers warm, clear mids and highs and booming bass from the bottom-mounted subwoofer.

It gets a max boost 4.3GHz Intel Core i7-8850H processor with a whopping 32GB of RAM. The laptops pair of 512GB PCIe SSDs in Super RAID 4 configuration and 1TB 7200rpm MHD helps this massive system move incredibly fast. What makes the Titan tick when it comes to gaming performance? It harbors a pair of Nvidia GeForce GTX 1070 GPUs in SLI formation with 8GB of vRAM each, which translates into jaw dropping frame rates. VR-ready? Check.

Opening the lid reveals a large mechanical keyboard and digital number pad occupying the space where a palm rest would be. The upper portion can be removed to gain access to RAM and the solid-state drives. It was the world’s first gaming laptop to feature a keyboard with Cherry MX Speed Switches. The SteelSeries Engine Software lets you choose between 18 different presets to customize the RGB backlighting. Off to the right of the keyboard is a 2.3×3.4-inch Synaptic touchpad that can transform into a number pad.

Although the Titan is a gaming battle station, you can add peripherals thanks to an overflow of ports including a pair of US 3.0 connectors on the right. Along the left, are three more USB 3.0 ports, as well as a 3-in-1 card reader, a Blu-ray burner [remember those], digital audio port, jacks for a mic and headphone, a Hi-Fi audio jack containing a Thunderbolt 3 port, a mini-DisplayPort, and an HDMI 1.4 port.

  • Impressive overall performance
  • Excellent customizable keyboard

For maximum performance in a more manageable form factor, the MSI GE66 Raider packs the power and speed of a desktop replacement in a more nimble 15-inch chassis. At just under $6000 the GE66 Raider comes with the kind of specs you’d see in the MSI GT83VR Titan above.

Like the Lamborghini Huracan to the Aventador, the Raider also looks like a baby GT83VR Titan. It’s a beautiful laptop consisting of a granite gray aluminum lid, black metal siding and a black plastic undercarriage. Weighing 5.3 pounds, the 14.×10.5×0.9-inch Raider is heavier than contemporaries. The keyboard resides in a slight recess above the touchpad and palm rest.

The 15.6-inch screen has a 1920×1080 resolution; colors are vibrant with crisp details. It has a 300Hz refresh rate and 3ms response rate, which makes all the difference in the world if you’ll be using this gaming laptop for image rendering. You’ll also get the most out of this setup when playing shooters like The Division 2. The side mounted Dynaudio DuoWave speakers sound their best when the Nahimic surround sound effect is enabled.

This baby is kitted out with an overclockable Intel Octa-Core i9-11980HK processor. 32GB of RAM, a 2x4TB PCI SSD RAID 0 for 8TB for blink-and-you’ll-miss-it speeds. And Nvidia RTX 3080 Super Max-Q GPU with 8GB of vRAM.

You can find ports all along the laptop, including a pair of USB Type-A 3.2 Gen 1 ports and a 3-in-1 card reader on the right. Along the left side, there’s a USB Type-A 3.2 Gen 2 port, a Thunderbolt 3 port and a headset jack. Around back is another USB Type-C port, a mini-DisplayPort 1.4, a Gigabit Ethernet input, and HDMi 2.0.

  • Stellar graphics
  • Excellent overall performance
  • Solid battery life
  • Blazing fast SSD

6. Gigabyte AERO 15 OLED XC

Last update on 2022-02-11 at 18:28 / Affiliate links / Images from Amazon Product Advertising API

The Gigabyte Aero 15 OLED XC is a lavishly equipped laptop for gaming. At 14×9.8×0.78-inches and 4.4 pounds, its dimensions are not as impressive as the other laptops featured on this list. But it’s bigger and heavier than the laptops it competes with like the HP ZBook Create.

This modest refresh comes with Nvidia’s new GeForce RTX 30 Series Ampere graphics silicon, which gets you an extra 5 to 10 FPS [frames per second].

The bright 15.6-inch non-touch panel has stellar contrast – it meets the VESA DisplayHDR 400 True Black standard. Colors are rich and vivid with sharp details and a 3840×2160-pixel resolution. The supplied Control Center utility lets you choose among five different color temperature settings and active blue-light reduction.

The Aero’s RGB backlit keyboard offers a dozen different rainbow-hued animation effects. Typing feel is quiet and somewhat shallow. The midsize touchpad glides and taps smoothly and clicks quietly with light pressure. But there aren’t any mouse buttons. There’s a fingerprint reader in the top-left corner of the touchpad for Windows Hello login.

HDMI and mini-DisplayPort video outputs are on the laptop’s left edge, along with a USB 3.2 Type-A port, a 2.5Gbps Ethernet jack, and audio connector. Two more USB-A 3.2 ports join one Thunderbolt 3/USB-C port, and an SD card slot.

Since the Aero 15 OLED XC isn’t that big, there’s not enough room for speakers. So, sound from the existing bottom-mounted speakers isn’t particularly loud and the bass is weak. But the audio is clear. And the Nahimic software has surround sound, sample music, movie, gaming and communication presets for you to tinker with.

  • Blazing fast performance
  • Beautiful 4K OLED screen
  • Pantone certified display
  • Plenty of port
  • RGB keyboard

  • Poorly placed webcam
  • Anemic speakers

Continuing in our trend from the chunkiest most expensive gaming laptops to expensive gaming laptops of the slimmer variety. The revamped Razer Blade 15 Advanced is also now equipped with the Nvidia GeForce RTX 30 series GPU, helping the laptop gain inclusion at the peak of today’s premium gaming laptops.

Its svelte build is one of the sleekest among gaming laptops in terms of style, quality and portability. The all-black paint job, thin bezels, sharp edges, and clean look create a striking silhouette that contrast many of the most expensive gaming laptops on this list. Although a high-end gaming laptop, the 14×9.3×0.67-inch chassis weighs 4.4 pounds, also making the Blade 15 Advanced one of the easiest to manage gaming laptops on the list.

It even sports one of the first laptop panels to combine a Quad HD [2560×1440] pixel resolution with a 240Hz refresh rate. Until now, only desktop monitors were able to achieve this level of performance. But Nvidia’s “Ampre” GPU [i.e., the GeForce RTX 3070 AND 3080] changed all that.

Helping the Razer Blade 15 Advanced hit new heights, its new GPU can leverage the fast 240Hz refresh rate of the desktop level 1440p display. Add an 11th gen Intel Octa-Core i9-11900H CPU, 32GB of RAM and 1TB SSD, and the price tag begins to make a lot more sense.

The keyboard has a balanced amount of travel and feedback. Plus, the keys are individually backlit with customizable RGB lighting. The Razer Synapse software allows you to change each key’s color and visual effects to create bespoke patterns.

Despite the thin frame, you still get useful ports like two USB 3.1 Type-A ports, USB-C port with Thunderbolt 3 support, and a headphone jack. On the right is another USB-A 3.1 port, another USB-C port [without Thunderbolt], an HDMI video output and an SD card reader.

  • Sleek, slim design
  • Premium metal build
  • 1440p res, 240Hz screen
  • Formidable GPU
  • Plenty of storage
  • Superior touchpad

  • Chassis can get hot in certain areas

Even less flashy than the Razer is the Lenovo Legion 5 Pro. If you’re more about speed and value than an elegant, complete package. Then the Legion 5 Pro could be for you.

It’s not as sleek looking or as lightweight as the Razer Blade 15 Advanced Edition, measuring 14×10.4×1.1-inch and weighing 5.65 pounds. And the only thing that really identifies it as a gaming laptop is the four air vents on the sides and the back edge, with a sizeable vent area on the bottom. The plastic chassis is entirely dark gray with black keys offering some contrast.

It’s built around an expansive 16-inch QHD [2560×1600-pixel] display with a 16:10 aspect ratio. Images are crisp, bright and fast. Colors in games and photos look vivid and Nvidia G-Sync technology matches the screen’s refresh rate without tearing or stuttering.

Lenovo dares to team an AMD Ryzen 7 5800H APU with Nvidia’s GeForce RTX 3070 graphics to deliver spectacular performance. The AMD processor outclasses its Intel competition in multithreaded benchmarks. You also get 64GB of RAM and a 2TB PCIe SSD. Along with Nvidia’s GeForce RTX 3070 graphics card with 8GB of vRAM. When the graphics lifting becomes heavy, the fans crank up and they’re audible. Otherwise, they’re relatively quiet.

To give the Legion Pro 5 some visual appeal, you can customize the four-zone RGB keyboard backlighting. The keyboard is roomy and comfortable with keys that feel firm with soft-landing switches that result in quiet typing experience. Centered below the keyboard is the touchpad which feels smooth with accurate gestures.

You get a useful and thoughtfully arranged collection of ports that are clearly labeled, including HDMI video output, three USB Type-A ports, one USB-C port [with power delivery and DisplayPort support but no Thunderbolt capability] and an Ethernet jack in the back. On the left edge is another USB-C port and headphone/mic combo jack. And on the right edge is a USB-A port.

  • Class-leading multithreaded CPU performance
  • GeForce RTX 3070 delivering major gaming muscle
  • Crisp, fast, bright 16-inch display
  • Solid build quality
  • Comfortable keyboard

  • Storage limited to 512GB SSD
