NBC's The Blacklist​​​​​​ was picked up for a first season on May 10, 2013. It premiered on September 23, 2013, and concluded on May 12, 2014. The season consisted of 22 episodes.

Synopsis[]

The season starts with Raymond Reddington surrendering to the FBI, establishing his bona fides by helping them to capture an international terrorist long thought to be dead. Red has special conditions for his help -- he has to remain apparently free so that his contacts will still communicate with him and he will only give information to rookie FBI profiler Elizabeth Keen.

As the season progresses it becomes clear that Red has at least one hidden motive for turning himself in to the FBI. From using the FBI to expose breathtaking corruption in the field of international humanitarian work, to enabling those working with him to exorcise personal demons.

Red also has an unknown adversary, and is he hiding behind the FBI, or using them to flush his enemy out and destroy their organization?

Red also has an arrangement with Alan Fitch. The Cabal ordered an attack on the FBI black site, known as the Post Office, which was the command center of The Blacklist task force, as a demonstration of their power. Red knows the secrets of the Cabal, which he has arranged to be divulged should he die.

It is eventually revealed that Red has a personal connection with Keen through her adoptive family. Keen is shown to have been a chess pawn and dupe as her husband, Tom Keen, is working for Milos Kirchoff; the man who drove Red to surrender himself to the FBI for protection and is destroying Red's syndicate. Red's arrangement with Fitch is weakened in the wake of the Post Office attack as his blackmail evidence is viewed as a bluff.

Red continues his battle with his unknown adversary, and eventually forces him to break cover in the season finale, where it is revealed that Elizabeth Keen's husband Tom Keen was spying on her for Red's adversary.

For Liz, it’s going to be one hell of a first day on the job and what follows is a twisting series of events as the race to stop a terrorist begins.

	Synopsis: Red predicts an impending catastrophe, rooted by the work of an assassin, called "The Freelancer." Together, Liz and Red go undercover to prevent from having his next target, Floriana Campo from being killed. Elsewhere, Ressler and newly re-hired CIA agent, Meera Malik, who’s been added to Red’s private security detail, keep an eye on them from a distance. Meanwhile, Liz considers what she should do next concerning Tom and the mysterious box she found hidden under the floorboards.

	Synopsis: The FBI is on the hunt for a high-ranking Chinese spy, Wujing which Red claims has hired him to help decode a classified CIA transmission. Liz, posing as an FBI cryptographer goes with Red to decode the message while protecting US government secrets. Meanwhile, Liz proactively investigates Tom.

	Synopsis: While continuing her investigation into the truth about Tom, Liz testifies against drug lord, Hector Lorca. Later another witness is abducted when he is forced to testify against the dangerous drug trafficker. Red’s interest is peaked and he informs the team that the witness may have been taken by "The Stewmaker" a man responsible for hundreds of missing and presumed dead people. Meanwhile, in an unlikely twist of events, Red and Ressler must work together for the first time.

	Synopsis: Red finds out that The Courier - a middle man that no one crosses - is delivering a package worth millions of dollars to an Iranian spy. Only the Courier is a ghost no one including Red, knows what he looks like. While racing to stop the mysterious criminal transaction, Liz, inadvertently finds herself thrust into a dangerous kidnapping plot. Meanwhile, Ressler must finally accept that Liz is a valuable asset to the team.

As the team goes undercover to catch him, Liz finds herself on the hunt for an unlikely couple. Meanwhile Liz and Tom find themselves at another bump in their relationship and Ressler debates whether or not he should give his ex-girlfriend his blessing.

Elsewhere, at an elaborate party at the Syrian Embassy, Red convinces Liz to pull off a covert heist.

Meanwhile, Red investigates the woman who tempts Tom while in Orlando at a teacher’s conference.

Elsewhere, their main objective is to track down Berlin, a prisoner on the plane who is somehow involved.
