I attended a Portland meet up at the end of February here and had the pleasure of connecting with Pretty and Cute, a local Asian beauty shop here in Portland Oregon. I have known the owner for many years now and she reached out to offer a product in exchange for my honest review. After surfing the Pretty and Cute website, I decided to try the Claire's Guerisson 9 Complex Cream because of the positive reviews I had read, especially from those with combination and sensitive skin like mine.

To start, my skin type during autumn is normal to dry. My skin can also be quite sensitive and temperamental. I am usually very acne prone however, with the incorporation of Curology, my skin has been less breakout prone. My review will reflect how this cream works for my personal skin type and condition and as always, your results may vary.

I do want to point out that this cream does contain horse oil, a very controversial ingredient in skin care products. As a pescatarian, I do find the idea of horse oil, a byproduct of horse meat (a big industry in Asia) disturbing. However, the scientist in me wanted to test this cream in the name of beauty. After using this, I will not be using any more products containing horse oil. I just want to say this ingredient is just not for me but I do not pass judgement on those who use this ingredient in their skin care products.

The Claim: Claire's Guerisson 9-Complex Cream contains horse oil, an ingredient known to help skin recovery and improve scars. This formulation also contains a high concentration of ceramide which helps strengthen the skin's moisture barrier plus it helps the skin retain moisture over a long period of time. This is also suppose to contain whitening functions, helping to lighten scarring. Lastly, this is also said to be anti-aging, containing properties to help stimulate cell renewal. Packaging: This cream comes in a sturdy glass jar with a tiny spatula and contains 2.47 fl. oz / 70 ml. Again, I appreciate the glass jar and the simple and slightly farmhouse looking packaging. This retails for $20 on Pretty and Cute.

Patch Testing: Every product I use goes through a very detailed patch testing period. I always patch test and I recommend patch testing to everyone. This is how I introduce new skin care products to my easily irritated skin. Patch testing can look different for everyone but for me, I test products in stages. For this particular cream, I applied it to my more sensitive areas, a different location every night for four nights. If no reaction occurs, I move forward and begin to apply the product to half of my face. I will also do this twice within a 24 hour period. If all goes well, I begin to use the product on my entire face and neck. This cream did not cause any reaction.

Texture and Formula

: This is a buttery texture thanks to the shea butter and seed oils and I find that this has a slight oily finish. At first I thought it was too rich for my skin when I started using this in the late spring. I put it to the side through the summer and brought it out again now that the weather is colder. This cream is definitely more of a winter cream for my skin type as it does fair better when my skin is more on the drier side. I found that this works best for my skin used as a sleeping mask as the occlusive properties helps steal in moisture and helps with dehydration.

The main ingredients are horse oil, ceramide, niacinamide, snail secretion filtrate, lavender and chamomile extracts, centella asiatica, green tea, hyaluronate and human Oligopeptide-1. This does contain extract such as sage, peppermint, apple mint, melissa officinalis and rosemary that those with sensitive skin might find irritating because they are active extracts.

This cream does have a strong grapefruit fragrance that I honestly don't care for. I am not a fan of grapefruit so while some people might enjoy the scent, I do not.

Results: This cream does a very good job at hydrating my skin and works very well over the many layers of other skin care products I use on a daily basis. During the day, this cream is a bit too heavy but works well as a night cream/sleeping mask. After testing this during colder weather and during the warmer summer days, I can say that this was way too heavy for the summertime but works well in the colder months. This did plump and balance the skin. I did notice that this help relieve some redness and my skin seemed calmer when using this cream. As far as any anti-aging or whitening claims, I would need to use this cream more consistently and for a longer duration to see any skin changing effects.
