Dell recommends Partitioning your hard drive after you install a hard drive and then Formatting it to use it to store data. Partitioning the drive in Windows means to section off a part of it and make that part available to the Operating System (OS).

Choose your Operating System from the list below and follow the given steps:

  • Windows 10 and 11
  • Windows 8 and 8.1
  • Windows 7

Windows 8 and 8.1

Create a partition from unpartitioned space with these steps:

  1. Hold the Windows key on your keyboard and press R.
  2. This launches the Run the utility. Type diskmgmt.msc inside the text box and press Enter. This opens the Windows Disk Management utility.
  3. To create unallocated space, shrink your hard drive. When you shrink your hard disk, the remaining space becomes unallocated.
  4. To do this, right-click your main drive and select Shrink Volume.
  5. Now enter the amount that you want to shrink the hard disk by in megabytes (MB).
  6. After the Shrink is done, you will then see the region of unallocated space (shaded black). Remember, this space is not yet usable.
  7. Right-click the region of unallocated space and select New Simple Volume.
  8. This launches the New Simple Volume Wizard and this guides you through the installation process.
  9. Assign the disk a drive letter. You can choose any drive letter that is not currently in use.
  10. Select a file system for the disk. The file system is the type of format or foundation that the storage device has. If you plan on installing a Windows OS to the partition, select the NTFS file system.
  11. Name the partition in the Volume Label text box. You can choose any name for your partition.
  12. Now click Finish to create the new partition.

I installed Windows 7 ultimate, and I installed it on C partition, but I left a huge amount of unallocated space (490Gb). Now, I want to create simple storage partition, but I cannot do it with Disk Management.

HP Probook is my laptop. And sorry for not having normal screenshots.

Here's the issue:

1) This is how MyComputer looks like. The HP partitions was there by default:

Cannot create new volume unallocated space

2) This is my Disk Partition Management. You can see how I have as certain amount of unallocated space.

Cannot create new volume unallocated space

3) I use right click > New volume > and then in the Wizard I choose the following:

Cannot create new volume unallocated space

4) This is the final step of the wizard, everything looks fine:

Cannot create new volume unallocated space

5) And then, it pops out this dialog box: I press Yes:

Cannot create new volume unallocated space

6) After I press Yes, it gives me an error: No matter what size I choose, I tried maximum amount, I tried 15Gb, 300Gb... always the same:

Cannot create new volume unallocated space

What should I do? But, can I do it somewhere without installing 3rd party software.

Why can't I extend volume into unallocated space?

Windows also doesn't allow you to extend a primary partition with unallocated space in an extended partition, so it is to extend a logical partition with space in a primary partition. Therefore, to fix this issue and extend a volume, you'll need to turn to third-party partition manager software for help.

Why can't I create a new simple volume?

Why does the New Simple Volume option show as greyed out on your computer hard drive. The basic reason is that your disk is MBR disk. Generally, due to the two limitations on MBR disk, it stops you from creating a new volume in Disk Management: There are already 4 primary partitions on the disk.

Why can't I extend my C drive even though I have unallocated space?

The EFI System partition is keeping you from extending into the unallocated space. You would need to use a third party partition management software to move the EFI partition over then extend the C: partition into that space.
