Đánh giá adidas ultra boost 19

Hey what’s going on guys, it’s me Nigel back with another honest sneaker review. I just got my hands on the Adidas Ultra Boost 19 so I thought it’ll be good to do a comparison between the 4.0 version and this latest version to let you have a better idea of the main differences between the two!

If you have not checked it out already, do check out my review on the 4.0 edition first!

So back to the Ultra Boost 19, this new series of Ultra Boost is the latest addition to the BOOST family and I would say it’s long overdue. The 4.0 edition was released in late 2017. Since then, there has not been much changes to the Ultra Boost series and that has made things kind of boring… (at least for me since I’m a huge fan of BOOST sneakers). But after a long wait, Adidas has finally answered sneakerhead’s wishes with this new Ultra Boost series — the Adidas Ultra Boost 19.

This new sneaker series is designed to be an upgrade from the previous editions. Here are some of the reported upgrades:

  • One-piece primeknit 360 upper
  • Upgraded Torsion Spring Plate for greater support
  • 3D-printed heel frame for greater stability
  • Enhanced BOOST Midsole (said to be 20% more BOOST)

So all these sounds fancy and all, but the bottom line is, which is better? Well, here’s my honest review to help you decide which is a better choice of sneaker for you!

1. Adidas Ultra Boost 19 Features

So I’m sure you’re already aware of the existing features of the Adidas Ultra Boost 4.0. If not, check it out here!

I’m going to now break down the reported upgrades on the Adidas Ultra Boost 19 so as to give you a better idea of the differences between the two.

Primeknit Upper

Lets start off with the primeknit upper. As listed above, the Ultra Boost 19 has a one piece primeknit 360 upper. Technical things aside, I feel that the primeknit upper is more stretchy than before. This is a plus point for me as I like to wiggle my toes around in my sneakers. However, if you like a firmer feel around your toes area, then the 4.0 version would be more suitable for you.

Breathability remains awesome for both sneakers. I enjoy running in these as I sweat substantially through my feet when working out, so the breathability does help minimize sweat and keeps my feet feeling comfortable.

Design wise, there are some changes to the primeknit pattern as well (as you can see above). The new 19 version is made up of colored threads lined horizontally across the upper, which does add variety to the normal design.

Outsole

Next up, the outsole. If you have read my review on the 4.0 edition, you would have known that one of my ‘complains’ was the outsole. I mentioned that the outsole was thinner than average, causing it to be worn out more easily. This results in less traction over time which lowers running performance. Thankfully, the new 19 edition seem to have that fixed! The outsole is slightly thicker so it’s more resistant and will likely last longer. You can refer to the images below for the difference in outsole between the 2 sneakers.

Torsion Spring Plate

Moving on, the upgraded Torsion Spring Plate is supposed to give greater support around your midfoot area. Personally, I don’t feel this difference much. Don’t get me wrong, the support is still amazing! I just don’t feel much difference between the 2 versions.

Heel Frame

The heel frame has also changed this time round, leaving only the outline design instead of the entire plastic piece. Both looks amazing to me but if I have to choose, I’ll go for the new design as it looks simpler (I’ll go for simpler designs anytime!) As for functionality, I find the new heel frame more fitting around the heels. This provides greater stability, especially for running purposes.

Padding

As for padding around the sneaker collar, the Adidas Ultra Boost 19 has clearly firmer but thinner padding than the 4.0 version. And this is not necessarily a bad thing. For running, this keeps your ankles more rigidly locked in place while maintaining comfort, proving useful when running around corners. Then again, for leisure purposes, the Adidas Ultra Boost 4.0 would feel more comfortable around the ankles due to greater cushioning from thicker padding.

P.S. You may refer to the images under Style below to see the difference in padding between the 2 sneakers

Midsole (20% more BOOST)

Lastly, the most significant upgrade in my opinion — a 20% increase in the BOOST midsole. The BOOST midsole has been the highlight of Adidas sneakers for many years now so its no surprise the new Adidas Ultra Boost 19 comes with an upgraded BOOST. You can clearly see the increased BOOST material in the pictures below, mainly in the rearfoot area.

I tried running in these and the enhanced BOOST in the Adidas Ultra Boost 19 do indeed give greater bounce and support. So if you’re an avid runner, I would recommend the 2019 version rather than the 4.0 version. However, I maintain my stance that Ultra Boost sneakers are only good for running at moderate speed. At higher speed, I find the BOOST providing too much cushioning, lowering performance.

Many have reported the 2019 version feeling heavier than the 4.0 edition but in fact, it’s the other way around. I suspect this is due to the new distribution of BOOST for the midsole. Anyway, I didn’t find the decrease in weight a problem at all. At the end of the day, it still feels great to run or walk in these.

2. Comfort

The Adidas Ultra Boost 19 is designed to gain a level up on its comfort level but I think it ultimately depends on personal preference. For me, I’ll say the 4.0 edition is more comfortable as I enjoy the thicker padding along the sneaker collar and tongue (it feels like pillows hugging my ankles!). On the flip side, if you enjoy a firmer hold around the ankles, then the 19 version would be more suited for you.

Frankly speaking, both editions are hella comfortable. Among all the sneakers I’ve worn in my life, the Adidas Ultra Boost has always been on the top of my list for comfort level. So if you’re stuck between the two in terms of comfort, I’m pretty sure neither one would disappoint you.

3. Style

Since 2015 (when the Adidas Ultra Boost first hit store shelves), these sneakers have been a lifestyle essential for many. And the new 19 edition is no different. With the extensive range of colourways released, it’s no wonder many people are spending to get their hands on these sneakers. Personally, I find that the 19 edition has a simpler design compared to the 4.0 edition so I would recommend it if you prefer a less extravagant design. But lace cage wise, I do prefer the 4.0 edition more (difference shown below).

As you can see, the 19 lace cage is made of a full-piece plastic while that of the 4.0 is made of a plastic piece with striped holes. I personally think the 4.0 lace cage complements the overall colourway of the sneaker better, making it look more aesthetically pleasing. Material wise, the 19 edition is thinner and feels flimsier, though that does not really affect the overall look much.

Here’s where I’m stuck. Both looks amazing to me! I like the lace cage more on the 4.0s but the simpler design on the 19 version looks great too! And to make it worse, Adidas has always went all out on the colourway choices of the Ultra Boost series (it’s out to take my money!!) Alright jokes aside, style wise I’ll let you decide which is better (while I struggle myself too). Because ultimately, our sneaker choice depends on our own personal style too, don’t you agree?

4. Sizing

Both the 4.0 and 2019 versions fit true to size for me. I had no issue switching over to the Ultra Boost 19 with the same size!

5. Cost

Both editions carry the same retail price tag which, I’m sure you guys should know by now, ain’t cheap. The average retail price of $180 is more expensive compared to other running or lifestyle sneakers. However, given that the 4.0 edition has been released for awhile now, you can probably pick them up at a lower price (as low as $100 during sale seasons) from various retailers and even on Amazon. So cost wise, the 4.0 edition seems to be a better deal!

P.S. I’m currently working on a ‘deals’ section on my site that will feature many not-to-be-missed deals so stay tuned! You can subscribe to the Honest Soles email newsletter to get immediate notification when it’s released!

Anyway, I’ve picked up quite a few pairs of Ultra Boost over the years so if you ask me if it’s worth the price, I’ll say every penny. What I like about this sneaker is its versatility, meeting both my running and lifestyle needs. That alone, I think the cost is largely justified.

6. Final Words

Both editions of Ultra Boost look great and feel great in my opinion. But if I were to give a final verdict, I’ll say the 19 edition is more suited to meet running needs while the 4.0 edition would appeal more to those looking for a lifestyle sneaker.

This isn’t surprising since the various upgrades seemed to be more focused on the performance of the sneaker rather than the design. So if you’re not so concern about the performance (though the 4.0 edition is already a pretty good running shoe in my opinion), and prefer a cheaper alternative that leans more towards a lifestyle sneaker, I would recommend getting the 4.0 instead.

So what do you think? The 19 version or the 4.0? Let me know in the comments below!

I hope this comparison review will aid you in deciding which is a better choice of sneaker for you. If there are any additional points I missed out or you would like me to cover, do let me know in the comments down below as well!
