Laptop GPU low usage

Hey everyone, I have an asus gaming laptop, and it has a 120hz display. And whenever i lower the graphics in-game my gpu usage drops so i never get higher fps. Even if i have max settings it is not full gpu usage. I have an i7-8750h and a gtx 1060 6gb and 16 gb of ddr4 ram. Any help would be appriciated. Thanks.

Check your ram and cpu usage. You might have a bottleneck.2Reply

I checked. There is no bottleneck. I even downloaded msi afterburner to check. It goes up to 100% in benchmarks though. 0Reply1 more reply

Are you 100% the game supports 60+ fps. If you are using vsync the game could be limited to 60 fps.

ItZLaZeR9·2y

All games support more 300 fps. I have v-sync off. I play fortnite, apex legends, overwatch and some cs go.

Your CPU can't handle higher FPS2Reply

Dude. Wth.1Reply1 more reply

Sorry

ItZLaZeR9·2y

I am Sorry if i was mean.

WolfOfDeribasovskaya·2y

You was not. I just know that your CPU is very similar to R5 2600, and my R5 2600 was limiting my 1060 6GB. After overclock to 4Gz my fps went up from 90 to 116fps in FarCry5

ItZLaZeR9·2y

It already runs at ~3.5 ghz. OC wont make a big difference.

WolfOfDeribasovskaya·2y

Yeah, it's even slightly slower, so no wonder. //cpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/Intel-Core-i7-8750H-vs-AMD-Ryzen-5-2600/m470418vs3955

Can you run Userbenchmark and post the results? Let's see how it performs overall

ItZLaZeR9·2y

I am not on my laptop right now. I will do that later.

ItZLaZeR9·2y

Yo dude. I monitored my performance. And all of the cores were the same except the 12 one was a tad bit higher. I think i might try oc, the problem is i dont know how.

WolfOfDeribasovskaya·2y

What did you use for monitoring? HWinfo?

ItZLaZeR9·2y

MSI Afterburner.

ItZLaZeR9·2y

The cpu is powerful enough to play and stream at the same time. It is an 8th gen i7.

WolfOfDeribasovskaya·2y

Well... Try to overclock it, and you'll see that fps will go up. But at first use monitoring tool[MSI Afterburner or FPS Monitor will do the job] and check single core usage during the game. If one of the cores hitting 100% - it's your limiter. Overall usage doesn't tell anything

ItZLaZeR9·2y

Ok i will do that next time i play. If that is the problem then what is the fix??

WolfOfDeribasovskaya·2y

The only fix I can see with a laptop is overclocking, or system optimization that will reduce parasitic load on CPU as much as possible.

allage·2y

Either fps cap/vsync or cpu bottleneck. You gotta give more info for people to actually help1Reply

ItZLaZeR9·2y

Fps is on unlimited. V-sync is off. And there is no thermal throttling nor is there a bottleneck. I chacked already.0Reply1 more reply

allage·2y

You have 2 sticks of ddr4 or just 1? Some laptops throttle performance if you aren't in dual channel

ItZLaZeR9·2y

It is one.

j919828·2y

That is exactly the symptom of CPU bottlenecking, speaking from experience. More fps puts more strain on the CPU, while better graphics puts more strain on the GPU. The CPU usage not at 100% doesn't mean it's not bottlenecking. Check the temperature and see if it's thermal throttling. If it is, repaste and cleaning the cooling system might help.1Reply

ItZLaZeR9·2y

I run at ~65°C. No thermal throttling here. And it never reaches above 60% cpu usage.1Reply1 more reply

j919828·2y

All games have this problem? Also try Intel Extreme Tuning Utility, CPU might have power throttling enabled. Use it at your own risk though, could be hard on the VRMs.

ItZLaZeR9·2y

All games except apex legends because it is graphicaly entensive.

WolfOfDeribasovskaya·2y

It's might be just single core utilization. People think if in task manager their 6 cores CPU loaded only 50% than it's can't be a bottleneck. In fact, there could be 3 cores loaded to 100 and 3 idle at 0, so overall it will show 50%, out performance will be limited by single core

ItZLaZeR9·2y

I will download msi afterburner and chack if all the cores are utilized. Gimme 1 day i think and i will come back to you.

j919828·2y

OP can check in Task Manager by right clicking and show all cores

WolfOfDeribasovskaya·2y

He can, but watching it in real time in the game would be more convenient, and Afterburner is an essential tool that good to have anyway
