Methodology TLDR:

This list was curated in collaboration with our League Experts: Adam Moriarty Isles, Dan Aux Harrison and Phy, and our Role Specialists: Shikari, Only, Command Attack, and Yen. Unlike most tier lists, we publish ours before, or as a patch goes live, according to the predictions of our in-house experts.

• Our first tier list aimed at lower elo, specifically gold elo and the surrounding brackets. These picks are effective when utilized in lower ranks and are the best tools for helping you to climb the SoloQ ladder as far as Diamond.
• Our second tier list is for high elo, aimed at Diamond 2 and above. These picks are curated by our experts and are an indicator of the champions inherent strength when played at the highest level. For a lot of the user base this information isnt super relevant for their games but provides invaluable insight into the game itself.
• We made the decision to return to two tier lists after heavily reviewing the feedback from our users. Ultimately we agreed that a general tier list aimed at Plat+ wouldnt serve a majority of the playerbase and we had missed the mark.
• Our difficulty system relies on Skill Floor, meaning that a Simple champion will yield results faster (around 5-10 games of learning)
• If a champion has a higher skill floor (Hard or Severe), it will take more time to learn them (20-50 games +) but you will be rewarded with better results over time whereas a Simple champion may fall off as you climb higher.

Top Illaoi

• Illaoi got some great attention in this patch, Riot have buffed her attack speed and her W and in low elo, people simply do not understand how to play against this champion.
• She is an absolute monster when ahead and basically feels unkillable. If Illaoi starts snowballing, she will be impossible to deal with and can easily 1v2 or even 1v3 with her Ultimate.
• Hullbreaker is also exceptionally strong on this champion, so expect to see a lot of her this patch.

Jungle Rammus

• Rammus has been a huge solo queue pick in those low elos for a long time and especially so since the start of this season.
• Chemtank fits him like a glove and the rest his itemization is helping him perform so well. Rammuss ganks are some of the most punishing in the game and theres not much you can do when he hits you with that Taunt.
• When Rammus gets a lead not only is he impossible to kill but he also can deal some significant damage and basically just run around the map taking every objective and locking down everyone he sees.

Mid Ahri

• Ahri is absolutely everywhere since her mini rework and shes got a solid win rate at all ranks. Ahri is so strong throughout the majority of the game now and is no longer reliant on her charm to do her job.
• She has a crazy amount of consistent damage now and resets on her Ultimate make her not only more potent throughout fights, but much harder to shut down due to the crazy mobility of this ability.
• Ahri is also a pretty safe pick across the board as she can deal with the majority of matchups and enemy team compositions overall.

Bottom Jhin

• Jhin has been absolutely everywhere so far this season and despite lots of changes so far this season hes been untouched.
• Jhins flexible and versatile playstyle allow him to fit into almost all team compositions and be capable of popping off in any game due to his burst, range and executing kit design.
• He doesnt really have any weak periods in games and can excel throughout all stages making him a very safe but also very dominant pick overall.

Support Blitzcrank

• Blitzcrank has always had the ability to carry games out of nowhere with one good hook and this is undoubtedly still a huge factor in his popularity.
• The fact that so many squishy enchanters are being prioritized too means that Blitzcrank is an even better option.
• Its pretty easy for Blitzcrank to go unpunished when roaming in low elo too so not only can he carry bot lane but also the rest of the map at the same time.

Top Graves

• Graves is easily one of the most blind pick-able champions in the top lane right now and he just fairs well into a huge variety of lanes. Graves ability to shove, scale and dominate games make him so hard to beat right now.
• He just deals so much damage and also surprisingly takes so much damage too due to his True grit passive.
• This champion is incredibly popular in high elo at the moment and despite so much changes to his itemization over the last year, hes still a heavily contested and prioritized pick from that top lane.

Jungle Hecarim

• Hecarim is just everywhere at the moment and this isnt going to change anytime soon with no nerfs coming into this patch.
• Some of his itemization did get changed but not enough to make a difference.
• Chemtank and Muramana are still performing incredibly well and giving Hecarim one of the highest ban rates in the game. Theres not much you can do against this pony when he starts carrying.

Mid Ahri

• Ahri is absolutely everywhere since her mini rework and shes got a solid win rate at all ranks. Ahri is so strong throughout the majority of the game now and is no longer reliant on her charm to do her job.
• She has a crazy amount of consistent damage now and resets on her Ultimate make her not only more potent throughout fights, but much harder to shut down due to the crazy mobility of this ability.
• Ahri is also a pretty safe pick across the board as she can deal with the majority of matchups and enemy team compositions overall.

Bottom Jinx

• Jinx is absolutely everywhere in high elo at the moment, people have got so confident with this champions capability, that they are just blind picking her left right, and center.
• Enchanters are everywhere and the hard-engaging supports that cause Jinx so much trouble are a lot rarer so far this season meaning she can get through lane with ease and start having an absolute riot going into the mid game.
• She absolutely tears through teams, turrets, and objectives and one reset can easily turn into penta after penta.
• Jinx has been fantastic since the new lethal tempo came along and didnt really get affected by those Shieldbow nerfs so is easily one of the strongest Bot lane picks in the game so far this season.

Support Janna

• Janna has one of the highest win rates out of all champions in the game at the moment and some of that was due to her Glacial Augment bug but shes still continued to dominate the majority of games since its hotfix.
• Her utility, disengage and constant versatility are unmatched and although it was uncertain as to whether her mini-rework was going to be a buff or a nerf, it seems it has made her a hugely contested pick in that support role.

Format and Methodology

Our difficulty ratings focus on how long it would take to start seeing a champions power level on our list in terms of the number of games invested.

Lets say youre debating between learning and climbing with Jax (A-tier | Simple) or Rengar (A-tier | Severe) youre going to want to go with Jax. Why? This is because Jax has a lower skill floor and would require less games to play at an A-Tier level in solo queue. If you tried to pick up Rengar, you wouldnt get the full value of A-tier until after about 15 matches of practice whereas with Jax, you would get that full 15 every time you play him.

Another example would be between Nidalee (S-tier | Intense) vs Xin Zhao (B-Tier | Simple). Lets say youre about to play your last match before promos and you get auto-filled to Jungle (a role youre not too familiar with). Even though hes lower on the list, youd be better off choosing Xin because you dont have the required number of games to break the skill floor of Nidalee.

Higher skill floor champions will scale better with time investment Severe champs will outperform Simple champs in the long run because Simple champs generally have their weaknesses exposed the higher you climb.

So if your question is, How long until Ill start seeing results?, the answer would be harder = longer time, easier = shorter time. If your question is. Will this champion still be strong as I climb in ranks?, the answer would be harder = moreso, easier = less so.

Disclaimer #1: If a champion isnt on our Tier List, it doesnt necessarily mean that you cant climb with them. Youll just have to put in more effort to get similar results as our Optimal, Great, and Good choices for climbing.

Disclaimer #2: This list is meant to evaluate the champions that we believe are best for climbing Solo Queue. Although there can certainly be some overlap, we are NOT looking to name the champions that are the best in pro-play or organized, competitive 5 on 5. This is why champs that require a ton of team coordination such as Ryze, may not be included or ranked highly.
